West African ensemble (djembe, dun dun and bells)

with Tebbe Lipere

This workshop aims to create the whole ensemble of traditional West African drumming, including bell patterns, dun dun and djembe. Thebe is currently working with the rhythms Mamaya, Konkoba and Mendiani. This workshop will take you step by step through executing these rhythms, using rhythmical games and exercises to enhance the African rhythm and sensibility. The music may appear difficult but it is sure to keep your attention.

West African Djembe Rhythms

with Alex Dayo

This workshop aims to introduce you to a wide variety of drumming techniques focussing on the accuracy of the sound and the beat. This focus on precision will ensure a confident progress in your play.

One of the benefits of this course lies in the refinement of your general listening ability through the use of fundamental polyrhythmic structures. You will learn to master your timing through the slow and fast tempos of traditional accompanying djembé rhythms, which are ubiquitous in West Africa. The main rhythms we will focus on are those of the traditional celebratory dances like the Demba Dong, the Marka Dong, Mandjani, Janssa, Koukou, Doundounba and Wolofo Dong

We will also:

look at the meaning of these different rhythms in their historical and contemporary contexts.
do percussive language exercises using rhythmic mime.
practice classic and improvised solos.

Creative percussion, composition and performance

with Anne Barwick

The workshop aims to introduce hand drummers to a wide range of percussion instruments and to enable them to create and perform percussion music as a group. At each workshop, new work is recorded, played back and made available on mp3 for between classes

Experienced percussions are invited to the workshop at intervals as guest tutors to help with and critique the developing piece of music.

The workshop encourages team work and awareness of others, confidence and positive self expression and gives students awareness of their own abilities and talents.
